This troubleshooting guide helps resolve common geofence issues, such as employees not being clocked out correctly when leaving the geofence or inaccurate GPS readings. Get tips on improving geofence performance and accuracy.
Geofences are a popular and powerful features that allows employers to ensure that employees only clock in or out from certain locations and can automatically clock and employee out if he leaves a specified area.
To enable geofences, see this helpful video.
There are a few things to keep in mind to ensure geofences behave as expected.
- Ensure that employees device is set up for optimal location accuracy - key factors to ensuring accurate location can be found in this article.
- Check that Wi-Fi is enabled on the user's device while clocked in. Wi-Fi is one of the tools the phone uses to accurately pinpoint the device's location even when data is available. If Wi-Fi is not enabled on the device while clocked in, it will increase the likelihood of the user pinging a distance from their actual location.
- It is important to set the geofence radius appropriately. Typically 200m is good for most locations. Sometimes it might need to be larger depending on factors outlined here. If you experience any unexpected behavior and you've followed the steps 1 and 2, then try increasing the geofence radius by 50m at at time.
Set Geofence Size Appropriately
Common reason why an Employee is not getting warned or clocked out when leaving a geofence.
Because location data provided by phones is not exact, it is possible that an employee may leave a geofence and not be clocked out even with the correct settings enabled. This can occur especially when the employee is near the perimeter of the geofence and/or leaves the geofence for a brief period of time. When reviewing the location of an employee, it is important to remember that that point shown on the map is an estimated location.
In the example shown below, the employee's estimated location is still within the geofence and therefore the employee will not be clocked out even though it appears that the employee has left the geofence.
