Learn about the pop-up warning that informs users about location permissions and tracking in VeriClock. This article explains why the pop-up occurs and how to resolve questions with background tracking on iOS and Android devices.
GPS Location Tracking - Continuous Location Tracking Warning
The VeriClock app requests permission from the OS (android/iOS) to access the users location. We request access all the time as this is required to do continuous tracking and ad hoc location lookups. We only do these location lookups when the user is clocked in, AND (this is very important) from the device the user clocked in from using the VeriClock App, i.e. phone, iPad, or tablet device. The app does not do location tracking if clocked in by another method or a different device. iOS and some Android devices have recently added a pop-up warning that tells a user if an app has the location permission for background tracking; this warning says something to the effect:
This warning comes directly from your iPhone device and is not generated by VeriClock.
There are typically three scenarios for that warning to pop-up:
- Simply having the permission enabled in our app when the user clocks in/out, or
- Having that permission, AND GPS running in the background briefly when the user closes the app after a clock out (the GPS is running while the app is open so it can quickly get a location fix on clock out -> if the account has GPS enabled).
- They WERE clocked in, and the app was doing background tracking appropriately....and then the warning pops up hours later after a clock out)
That being said, our solution only logs GPS events to a VeriClock account (visible only to Admins & Managers) when the user is clocked in.
*Users will only get this pop-up warning in their phone if they have been clocked in within the last three days. The number of times listing location was tracked took place when the user was clocked in during the previous three days. As the warning notes, no locations are tracked when the user is clocked out*
