VeriClock allows you to rename report columns to better match your company terminology, payroll imports, and internal workflows. Using Advanced String Customization, admins can quickly customize column labels directly within report templates, preview changes in real time, and save them for future use. This feature helps ensure reports are clearer, easier to interpret, and aligned with external systems, while common formatting tips make it easy to avoid errors and maintain valid report configurations.
In your VeriClock account click on your tabs Reports>Reports>select an existing report or use the Payroll (Default) report>click on the blue customize button.
Click the blue Customize button to open report customization options. Scroll down to find the option to rename report columns.
Check the box to enable Advanced String Customization, which is used to rename your report columns. Paste the formatting into the empty box below. Click the blue question mark icon next to Advanced String Customization to copy the columns you want to rename.
In the popup, click Show Reference (located under the blue question mark icon).
Scroll down to find the columns you want to rename.
Copy the row for each column you want to rename. If renaming multiple columns, separate them with a comma.
If you're renaming only one column, remove the comma at the end.
The last row should not have a comma at the end.
Formatting starts with an open curly bracket { and ends with a closing curly bracket }.
To rename a column:
Paste the row for the column you want to rename.
The first part is the internal column name, and the second part is your custom name.
Use a comma to separate multiple columns.
For example, to rename the Employee Name and Job columns, copy and paste them into the Advanced String Customization box between the curly brackets.
Next, rename the second part of each column row. For example:
Before:{"employee_name" : "Employee Name","job_code" : "Job"}
After:
After renaming your columns, click Preview to review your report.
Once you are happy with your changes, click the blue Save Template button to save your report template.
Give your report a clear, memorable name. Click Save to update an existing template (available only after creating one), or Save as New Template to create a new one.
When pasting rows to the Advanced String Customization box, you may see the following error:
Error parsing JSON. Must be a valid JSON object containing string keys. See help documents.
Common Causes of This Error:
Extra Comma – This can happen if you paste a row before the closing curly bracket (
}) and forget to remove the extra comma.Missing Curly Brackets – Ensure each section has both an opening
{and a closing}bracket.Missing Comma Between Rows – Each row should be separated by a comma, except the last one before the closing bracket.
Incomplete Row from Copy/Paste – If copying a row like
"cost" : "Cost",make sure you don’t remove essential parts. Also, if this row is the last in your list, remove the trailing comma before the closing bracket (}).
Double-check the formatting carefully, as even small mistakes can cause errors. If you need assistance with your reports, you can book a one on one demo from this link: Book a Support Demo.
